(you may need to be a Fi subscriber to use this) Hhhmm seems to be doing it automatically on my 3a. To do that, open the Settings app and tap Network & internet > Adaptive connectivity. It will automatically use mobile data when Wi-Fi is poor. Disabling it can prevent random Wi-Fi disconnects.
